The European Space (ESA) is preparing to launch two new satellites: FLEX and Sentinel-3C. Both satellites recently arrived at the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, where they are undergoing comprehensive testing and final preparations for the launch scheduled in September. These missions will further strengthen Europe’s capabilities in environmental and climate monitoring.
Sentinel-3C is part of the European Union’s program, which consists of a series of satellites capturing critical environmental and climate data. Sentinel-3C focuses on observations of the Earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere. Its measurements include sea surface temperatures, land temperatures, sea states, vegetation, as well as atmospheric parameters. The data collected supports researchers in precisely tracking and analyzing their impacts.
The FLEX satellite complements these observations by performing specialized measurements of plant fluorescence—a faint light signal indicating photosynthetic activity. The accurate detection of plant fluorescence allows conclusions regarding the and activity of vegetation, which plays a central role in the global carbon cycle. This enables better monitoring of phenomena such as stress, leaf loss, or growth cycles.
Combined data from Sentinel-3C and FLEX provide a comprehensive foundation to assess ecosystems and their responses to environmental changes. This integrated view helps improve models of the global carbon cycle, thereby enabling more reliable predictions of impacts. At the same time, it supports the development of targeted measures.
Currently, the satellites are in the final phase of preparation at the spaceport. All systems are being extensively tested, calibrated, and integrated onto the Vega-C rocket. Both satellites will launch simultaneously into a polar orbit, allowing global and frequent environmental observations—a crucial advantage for monitoring dynamic processes.
The inclusion of FLEX and Sentinel-3C in the European network affirms Europe's leading role in space-based environmental monitoring. In light of the growing consequences of climate change, the demand for precise and reliable data is increasing. These new satellites make a decisive contribution by systematically capturing natural and human influences, thereby laying the groundwork for protection and strategies.
Beyond scientific insights, the satellites offer practical benefits. Detailed vegetation monitoring assists agricultural operations in resource planning and helps detect damage from drought or pests early.
