At the third expert meeting of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) on 18 June 2026, national contact points (NCPs) and agricultural specialists discussed how new climate data can be integrated more quickly into farm-level and policy decisions. C3S data for operational use

C3S provides systematically prepared climate information — from observations and seasonal forecasts to long-term projections. For agriculture, temperature and precipitation series, soil moisture, drought indicators, evapotranspiration and derived metrics such as vegetation indices and growing degree days are particularly relevant. The workshop announced improvements: higher spatial resolution, expanded indicator sets and simplified access via the Climate Data Store.

User needs

Requirements vary by target group: advisory services and authorities need regionalized, reliable monthly bulletins and drought maps. Insurers require consistent, long-term data for risk assessments. Researchers and service providers need open interfaces to integrate data into their own tools. Farmers benefit primarily from timely guidance on soil moisture, precipitation anomalies and seasonal outlooks for tasks such as sowing, crop protection and irrigation.

Dialogue and co-design

A focus was placed on user involvement. NCPs act as a bridge between C3S offerings and users: they collect requirements, test products and provide structured feedback. In the interactive session participants specified wishes regarding spatial resolution, preferred temporal aggregations and missing indicators for particular crops. Participants stressed that comprehensibility and usability are as important as model quality: beyond raw data there is a need for clear metadata and intuitive visualizations.

Use cases in agriculture

The workshop discussed applications that would directly benefit from updated C3S products: early warnings for drought and heat support irrigation planning and cultivar choice. Seasonal forecasts help estimate yield risks and inform insurance premiums. Long-term projections feed into regional adaptation strategies and infrastructure decisions, for example on water storage. Continuous vegetation indices enable monitoring systems that estimate yield developments and detect pest or disease risks earlier.

Challenges

Four central barriers were identified:

– The need for finer spatial data in heterogeneous and mountainous regions. – Translating climate metrics into clear, locally validated operational recommendations. – Limited integration capacity among many users; training and simple interfaces are therefore essential. – The necessity of standardized formats to consistently merge data across authorities, advisory services and providers.

Role of National Contact Points

NCPs are expected to test products locally, consolidate feedback and support dissemination to end users. Co-design formats were proposed, such as pilot projects with farms, joint training modules and regular feedback loops. These approaches allow services to be iteratively improved and adapted to regional differences in cropping systems, irrigation and advisory structures.

Next steps

Planned follow-ups include additional workshops, pilot projects in selected countries and expanded training for national advisory services. Technically, integration with existing farm management tools should be simplified; APIs and ready-made notebooks are to be made more broadly usable. At the same time content preparation will be refined: short monthly bulletins, clear maps and action-oriented guidance for typical decision situations.

Context

Climate variability and extreme events are changing yields, cost structures and risks in agriculture. Well-prepared, usable climate data help limit losses, use resources more efficiently and plan adaptation strategies. The workshop made clear: technical solutions exist, but their impact depends on close alignment with user groups. Strong collaboration between NCPs and agricultural partners increases the likelihood that products reach advisory services and farm practice and thereby strengthen the sector's resilience.
